Six Bardstown Tigers Earn Spots in Governor’s Scholars Program

Six juniors from Bardstown High School are headed to one of Kentucky’s most prestigious academic experiences this summer after being selected for the Governor’s Scholars Program.

Congratulations to Derrick Greenwell, Katy Floyd, Mason Schat, Naru Sugie, Mackenna Smith, and Will Thomas on this remarkable achievement.

The Governor’s Scholars Program is a five-week residential summer program designed for rising seniors who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, and a commitment to serving their communities. Since its founding in 1983, GSP has helped Kentucky students discover their strengths, expand their perspectives, and build connections that shape their future paths — all at no cost to participants.

The selection process is highly competitive, with nearly 2,000 applicants across the state each year. Students advance through district nomination before completing a rigorous application that includes academic records, leadership experiences, recommendations, and an original writing submission.

This summer, these scholars will attend sessions hosted by Centre College, Morehead State University, or Murray State University, where they will engage in academic enrichment, leadership development, and collaborative learning.

Moments like this highlight the dedication, curiosity, and leadership that define our students.

We are proud of these Tigers and excited to watch them grow through this unforgettable experience.
